"How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" is Officially Vintage
Which means that iconic yellow dress is, too.
It’s the scene that launched a thousand prom dresses.
Composure Magazine editor Andie Anderson arrives at the ball—the climax of rom-com classic How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days—in a yellow slip dress and cheekily serenades her love interest Ben Barry (played by very hoMatthew McConaughey).
Hudson told ELLE/my former coworker that the buttercup gown was custom for the film, a collab between Carolina Herrera and the film’s costume designer Karen Patch.
Custom Herrera to be swiftly knocked off by every prom dress company on the market in 2003. Classic tale. For nostalgia, Halloween, and the like: there’s a similar version from BCBG, here’s an exact match, and a red version if that’s a better color for you.
Upon rewatch, I enjoyed Patch’s styling. Very no-nonsense but still memorable, and if the ensemble from the love fern scene is more your speed, here is an exact match on eBay (matching bag not included).
Speaking of Kate Hudson…
The Open Shopping Thread had a request for Penny Lane coats (thank you, Darby!), inspired by another of Hudson’s iconic roles. Characteristics that scream “Penny Lane” coat to me:
earthy-neutral shade—something like green or brown
skims the knee
fur trim (can be real or faux)
There’s… so much out there. I thought about making an Esty shopping list, let me know if that’s something y’all would like in the future—but here we go.
If you want to be… the literal character: soft green tapestry coat (size small), a dark tan sheepskin version (size large), and my favorite: a sage-green suede and fur beauty from France. Then get a pair of Dr. Scholl’s or Swedish Hasbeens.
Maybe you just want the spirit! The vibe! Why does she look so cool with a cigarette in her hand??? So easy. Look at this burgundy coat (size medium), cream wool with shearling trim (size large) and an all-black version (size medium) that’s New York-approved.
